Sure, Gabby Prichard scored three goals and Eileen Fiore dished three assists, leading undefeated Spackenkill in a 7-0 win over visiting Millbrook High School in girls soccer on Wednesday.
That was all well and good.
But what got the Spartans really cheering and hollering during the game: The goalie’s goal.
Savannah Barefoot scored her first career goal with 49 seconds remaining. On a fast break, Jacqueline Hannan sent a pass from the left flank to the middle and Barefoot booted a liner from 20 yards out into the right corner.
“She’s got a really good foot,” Spartans coach Mike Corbett said of Barefoot. His pun was unintentional.
But his decision worked as planned. Barefoot, the goalkeeper, was moved to midfielder in the second half. It was Spackenkill’s Senior Day and, Corbett said, he gave the senior the option of playing the field. Naturally, she shifted to center-midfield alongside her sister Maria.
Barefoot had narrowly missed the post with two minutes left, but she got a second chance a minute later and cashed in. “The whole team was elated,” Corbett said. “A lot of games she doesn’t get much action in net. So when she scored, everyone was fired up and excited.”
Senior Morgan Dominick scored, as did her younger sister, Mackenzie, and Spackenkill improved to 10-0.
“We’re trying to improve a little each game,” Corbett said. “We’ll continue to make tweaks and adjustments.”
Relax, opposing defenses. Those adjustments won’t include Barefoot playing the field.
